Member of the Month - Danny Kim!



What was your fitness background before you started at CFCL, and what made you decide to try CrossFit?

I started swimming ever since I was in pre-K, my parents enrolled me into a YMCA pre-K and part of our "fun time" was learning how to swim. I have a naturally competitive personality and my older sister was also in the program so I always wanted to make sure I can keep up with the older kids. I quickly got to qualify for "Lifeguard" but I was about 8 years too young to actually be one so I just stopped. I picked up tennis and played for a few years but all of my friends played volleyball so I picked that up, joined my HS team and played pretty seriously up until freshman year of college. After that, Engineering took over my life so "fitness" wasn't really a priority for me. That carried on into my first job and I just slumped into some seriously poor lifestyle habits. I gained 30 pounds (I worked long hours and was constantly stressed so I would just eat junk food - aka DONUTSSS). 

At some point, I just couldn't fit into my pants and I was too poor to buy a whole new wardrobe (lol) so I decided to go back to working out. My coworker told me he did CrossFit (of course he would tell me he does CrossFit...) so I eventually went for a free class. First workout - hated it. I felt so out of shape and so annoyed at myself for how slow and incapable I was... I almost blacked out on that workout and was ready to give up. Somehow, on the drive home, the endorphins kicked in and I started to feel amazing and like myself again. I decided to show up the next day... and the rest is history - I'm going on about 3.5 years now? 

What's your favorite CrossFit girl workout? 

dread all the girl workouts. Mostly because they make you really push your limits and they are sopainful (the good kind of painful). But if I had to pick... Karen (150 Wall Balls FT). Wall balls always came relatively easy for me so it's fun to see how far I can go unbroken on Karen :) My last record is somewhere in the 80s. I want to be able to go 150 unbroken someday! 

What goals are you working on right now?

In no particular order - Butterfly Chest to Bar Pull Ups; Muscle Up Form, Snatch Form (I want to hit 225#), Hand Stand Walking, CARDIO (improving cardiac capacity when I "feel tired").

Careless Whisper by George Michael ;) 

What is your favorite sandwich and why?

A thicc grilled cheese sandwich with BACON and thicc texas toast. omg.

If you could instantly become an expert at anything, what would you choose and why?

I would want to be an expert drummer. I play guitar but I always wished I could be a drummer...
