Gabby M. - Putting In The Extra Work to Excel and Compete

Gabby M. - Putting In The Extra Work to Excel and Compete

A few things that I have learned over the course of all my comps and training in CrossFit is your body is crazy machine that can do anything when you put the work in.  Mental toughness is a very really thing, it will push you to go further and harder not only during workouts but outside of the gym as well. Lastly, its awesome to get out of your comfort zone and test yourself against a new crowd. Competitions test your fitness and allow you to create new goals!

Jamie K. - Running My First 5-miler

Jamie K. - Running My First 5-miler

To be honest, my running training leading up to the 5-miler was pretty much non-existent.  Prior to this, the most I’d ever run in terms of a race was a 5K, and the most I’d run continuously was maybe four miles (and that was a long time ago!).  Basically, the only training I did was CrossFit.  The Thursday before the race I went out for a run to see if five miles was doable since I hadn’t ran more than a mile consecutively in over six months.  I started at a moderate pace and to my own amazement, just kept going. For 4.5 miles.  At that point I knew that I would be fine and that CrossFit had somehow accidentally made me a runner (well, almost).

Shane M. - Training for the Fire House

I had considered trying CrossFit for years and always thought just an hour workout wouldn’t be enough since I usually spent a few hours in the gym. A few other firefighters and friends told me to come check out City Line and I haven’t looked back since. I have seen changes in my body, my energy level and my mindset. I have never been in as good of shape as I am today thanks to the daily workouts.

Barbell Bettys was definitely a great experience. It was a very supportive environment, the girls were really nice and encouraging, and coach Cassi is awesome! It was really cool learning how to lift correctly and making progress every time. I’ve never felt stronger. I was surprised by the confidence I gained during Betty’s, it was good for WODs and for my other outside activities. My favorite story about how Betty’s made me stronger and more confident is when I mistakenly ended up in a difficult hiking trail in Acadia National Park. It felt more like rock climbing than hiking, but somehow I was not scared, I felt so strong and I was able to get to the top of the mountain. I think that before Betty’s (and crossfit in general) I would have quit at the first steep climb.

Mary C. – A ‘Barbell Betty’ Who Got Her Nutrition On Point

My son Matt and my daughter Julia had been going to CFCL. They kept telling me I should try it. I never in a million years would consider joining, but Matt came home one day and told me he had talked to Coach Mat, and that I needed to contact him to set up a time for my intro class. I didn’t seem to have a choice. I felt I had to give it a try, since I encouraged them to try new things. I went to my intro class with Kevin and signed up- I couldn’t go home and tell them I wasn’t going to at least try it out for a few weeks.  My kids had encouraged me and promised me I wouldn’t humiliate myself.

Johnny B. – Accountability’s key.

My first impression was when I least expected it, when I missed my first class. I had spoken with Mat on the phone to see if I could come drop in for a class the next day. Well that night I had a few too many beers, and opted to not drop in the following morning for the 9:30 am class (rough night). I had a random number calling me at 9:35, and they left a voicemail. I checked it right after it stopped ringing and sure enough it was Mat Frankel. I thought holy shit, this dude is committed. He was calling me to see if I was ok, and if I was still going to be coming. I was terrified, so I had the choice of never going again, or showing up the next day. There have still been a few hangovers since, but theres always CFCL to whip my ass back into shape.

Brain S. - I Ran a Faster Marathon doing CrossFit

I’ve always been pretty good with staying active with soccer, running, and going to the gym…but over the last year or two I noticed my trips to the gym were getting fewer and further between what with getting busier with work and other excuses creeping in.  Noticing that I wasn’t the fastest on the field anymore and with injuries creeping in I knew I needed some structure with my workouts, and even more than that, I needed accountability.  Enter CrossFit…enter CFCL.

Leigh P. - Overcoming Injury with CrossFit

I joined CrossFit because I had been bored of the monotonous workouts I was doing at my gym and eventually I just stopped going. A friend of mine had been raving about CrossFit, and while I was intrigued, I was very intimidated. But it was one winter, frustrated by the fact I was gym-less and “couldn’t” workout outside, I made the decision to just go for it!

Alexa M. - Becoming A Division 1 Rower

CrossFit has impacted my life in so many ways. It’s given me a lot of opportunities and through them I have met a lot of amazing people. I started doing CrossFit about 5 years ago and never would I have imagined it would be this big of a part of who I am today. When I first started CrossFit it was just to help gain strength for hockey, but then it became something so much more that I loved just as much as being on the ice. I looked forward to doing it everyday and getting to compete against myself and others at the gym. It has also taught me a lot about body mechanics, eating right and mental toughness. CrossFit has given me some very important people in my life, friends who I couldn’t imagine without and a family.

I was really missing working out in a group setting. I also needed some direction after my arm surgery. I didn’t know where to start and had a few friends tell me that I would love CrossFit so I decided to try it out! Everyone who hasn’t tried CrossFit thinks that it’s a cult. After being apart of the CFCL community for over six months I’ve realized that it’s not a cult at all.

I don’t think I can pinpoint a favorite City Line memory, as there are many. I’m reminded every day of why City Line is important to my family and me. Some of our best friends, a few great business contacts, and my sons’ favorite babysitter,  have come from City Line. That, more than anything makes it easy (kind of) to get up at 4:30am to do thrusters and burpees.
