What is an InBody scan?

InBody devices use a method called Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to measure body composition, which divides your weight into different components, such as lean body mass and fat mass, to assess your health and help guide interventions. What is body composition?

Body composition is used to describe the percentages of fat, bone, water, and muscle in human bodies. Two people of same sex and body weight may look completely different from each other because they have a different body composition.

What are macros?

Macros refer to the weighing and measuring of macronutrients - protein, carbohydrates and fat. It entails tracking the calories and types of foods you eat in order to achieve changes in body composition (e.g. lose fat/ gain muscle.) To determine your calorie and macronutrient needs, a coach will use stats from your InBody scan to calculate these numbers.

Should I focus on food quality or quantity?

If you are just starting on your nutrition journey, it is most important to first examine the quality of the food you are eating. Eating high quality foods provide the most vitamins and nutrients, make you feel fuller longer, balance your blood sugar and improve your energy. All of these benefits of eating high quality foods actually build the foundation for creating healthy long term eating habits.

Once you have built this knowledge, if you want to make further progress in changing your body composition then the focus shifts to continuing to eat high quality food while also monitoring the quantity of food you are taking in via tools like macro tracking or the Zone Diet.

What is the Whole30 diet / Paleo Diet?

Whole30 is an elimination diet that is helpful when you want to focus on food quality for a short period of time. It eliminates grains, dairy, beans and legumes, sugar and alcohol. The Paleo diet follows similar rules except that it allows things like all natural sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, etc.) and baked goods containing grain free flour.

What is the Zone Diet?

The Zone diet is similar to the macro diet in that it also tracks macronutrients - protein, carbohydrates and fat. However, it uses “Zone Blocks” to calculate how many grams of protein, carbs and fat you can have per day. The number of Zone blocks you should eat per day depends on your weight, height, waist and hip measurements.
